Is your last name Aschmann (or Aschemann or Ashman)? There aren't that many of us in the entire world. Some of us come from the Baltic region (Latvia, East Prussia), and others from Switzerland. Some with the spelling Ashman are English (or of English ancestry), but many are Aschmanns who changed the spelling. In any case, we're scattered hither and yon around the world. |

If you and I share this last name, please write me: I’d like to find out some more about our common history, and share what I know with you. I have recently been finding evidence that most or all of the Baltic Aschmanns are probably Jewish, whereas the Swiss Aschmanns are not Jewish. Therefore, the two groups are apparently not related. See Jewish Historical Links and Information below for more information. I do not know if the last name Aschemann has a different origin from Aschmann, but I have listed a few Aschemanns below. In Latvia the name Aschmann has a Latvian form, Ašmanis (š=sh). A few examples are listed below, in Other Historical Links and Information. |

There is also an English Ashman family, which evidently has a non-Jewish, Anglo-Saxon origin, as shown by the link below in Non-Jewish Historical Links and Information. However, some of the Aschmanns also chose to adopt the Ashman spelling after immigrating to the U.S. or to Israel, so it is not always easy to distinguish which are which. The Jewish Ashmans are probably not descendants of the Anglo-Saxon Ashmans. |

Zwicky”. The Swiss Aschmanns sent me some pages: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. These families were evidently not Jewish, based on their occupations and history. The original name was apparently Astmann, which would mean “branch man”. |

My grandfather, Hermann Wilhelm Alexander Aschmann, was born in Riga, Latvia, in 1880, which at the time was part of the Russian Empire. He knew many languages: German (apparently the language of the home), Latvian, Russian, Yiddish, Norwegian, English, and perhaps others. In his youth he worked as a cobbler or shoemaker in the Imperial Russian Navy. He and his family considered themselves Prussian Germans. However, the fact that he knew Yiddish makes me wonder if they might not actually have been Jewish. According to a manuscript written by my aunt Mildred, now deceased, his mother claimed to be of noble birth and a baroness, but my aunt seems to have had doubts. She wrote: “My father’s father was a total mystery,” which seems surprising if there was nothing unusual in his background. The late 1800s were a very difficult time for the Jews in the Russian Empire. They were restricted to living in the Pale of Settlement, which included Lithuania but not Latvia. Even within the Pale, Jews were forbidden at times to live in agricultural communities, or certain cities. They were frequently the victims of pogroms. Because of this, a number of Jews chose to convert to Christianity. It is possible that my grandfather’s family were among these. I have run across two other Aschmanns whose grandfathers came from the Baltic region. They similarly have no additional information as far as ancestry, which may suggest a similar history. |

Aber die Tatsache, dass er Jiddisch gekannt hat, macht mich mich fragen, wenn sie nicht tatsächlich jüdisch gewesen sein dürften. Gemäß einem Manuskript, das von meiner Tante Mildred geschrieben worden ist, jetzt verstorben, seine Mutter hat beansprucht, der adliger Geburt und einer Baronin zu sein, aber meine Tante scheint, Zweifel gehabt zu haben. Sie hat geschrieben: „Der Vater meines Vaters war ein gesamtes Geheimnis“, der Überraschung scheint, wenn es nichts ungewöhnlich in seinem Hintergrund gab. Darum einige Juden haben gewählt, in Christentum umzuwandeln. Es ist möglich, dass die Familie meines Großvaters unter diesen waren. Ich habe zwei anderen Aschmanns gefunden, dessen Großväter vom baltischen Gebiet gekommen sind. Sie haben ähnlich keine zusätzlichen Informationen so weit wie Abstammung, die eine ähnliche Geschichte vorschlagen darf. |
